Editor note: Hong Kong pride takes many forms, sometimes it's on the ice. We're cheering on four Hong Kong athletes making history as the largest team ever sent to the Winter Olympics.

Contributed by Ben Parker

A record four athletes are representing Hong Kong in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy: Adrian Yung Hau-tsuen (Alpine skiing), Eloise King Yung-shih (Alpine Skiing), Darren Kwok Tsz-fung (Speed Skating), and Joey Lam Ching-yan (Speed Skating). Given it has a population of 7.5-7.7 million people with a subtropical climate, Hong Kong is not a place that would come to mind as a place to produce Winter Olympians. Yet here they are, sending four athletes to Milan, which is the most in its history.

As for what events they’ll be competing in, Adrian Yung will be competing in the men’s slalom and men’s giant slalom while Eloise King will be competing in the women’s slalom. Olympics.com provided a breakdown of the difference between slalom and giant slalom:

Giant Slalom

The fastest technical event, the giant slalom is contested over two heats on the same day. The times are added together, and the fastest total time determines the winner. The courses are different and skiers reach speeds of around 80 kph. The start of the second run is in reverse order from the top 30 rankings of the first run.

Slalom

The slalom is the most technical event in Alpine skiing with gates set very close together. Skiers need to perform fast turns and rapid changes of direction. Slalom has the...Read More

Charlotte 和 Ana 現正跟 Patricelli Center for Entrepreneurship 和 Wesleyan 大學 Jewett Center for Community Partnerships (JCCP) 商議擴展學會的覆蓋及影響.

Charlotte Li: LinkedIn，電郵

Ana Li: LinkedIn，電郵
<p class=" undefined s-component-content s-font-body s-component s-text s-blog-section-inner sixteen columns container s-block-item s-repeatable-item s-block-sortable-item s-blog-post-section s-narrow-margin blog-section" style="font-size: 18px;...Read More

Cantonese Forum at Wesleyan

Save Cantonese met with two students who are leading the wave of Cantonese learning at Wesleyan University this month over Zoom. Since its launch in February 2025, Wesleyan College's Cantonese Forum has become a vibrant hub for cultural exchange, historical inquiry, and practical language learning. Led by sophomores Charlotte Li and Ana Li, the forum is redefining what student-driven global engagement can look like. Charlotte, a sociology, science and technology, and global engagement major, teaches the forum's classes—held every Monday and Wednesday over 13 weeks—with a focus on conversational Cantonese and cultural fluency. Ana, majoring in government, global engagement, and data analysis, supports programming and outreach, helping the forum grow into a campus-wide resource.

Their mission is clear: to keep Cantonese alive and relevant. That includes exploring the history of Hong Kong and its complex relationship with the language, as well as equipping students with real-world skills—like how to navigate Hong Kong International Airport with confidence.

Each semester, the forum hosts invited panels featuring scholars and community leaders who speak on topics ranging from linguistic preservation to Hong Kong's political evolution. These events have sparked campus-wide conversations and drawn interest from key partners. Charlotte and Ana are currently in talks with the Patricelli Center for Entrepreneurship and Wesleyan's Jewett Center for Community Partnerships (JCCP) to expand the forum's reach and impact.

But Charlotte and Ana's work goes far beyond the classroom. They're building a movement—one that connects language, identity, and action. "We're not just teaching Cantonese," says Charlotte. "We're creating a space where history, culture, and community come together." Ana adds, "This is about making sure our stories—and our language—have a future." With their leadership, the Cantonese...Read More

Save Cantonese

[New Feature] CantoPop Map

New feature alert!

At Save Cantonese, we love projects that connect people with Hong Kong culture in fresh and creative ways. That’s why we’re so excited to showcase CantoPop Map, an interactive tool created by one of our amazing volunteers, Devon Crebbin.

The CantoPop Map lets you explore Hong Kong through the lens of Cantonese music videos. Each pin on the map represents a real filming location. With just a click, you can:

See the exact spot where the video was filmed

Jump to the timestamp in the music video

Get directions to the location

Peek at Google Street View (when available)

Discover not just artists, but also the behind-the-scenes contributors who make Cantopop possible

There’s even a game built in: Cantopop Guesser, a geoguesser-style challenge where you match a Street View location to the right music video.

The story behind the project is just as fun. While researching Cantonese AI and living in Hong Kong, Devon dove deep into Cantopop, tracking down music video spots across the city. What started as a personal scavenger hunt soon became a fully interactive map, one that’s already been visited more than 1,500 times and even caught the attention of artists like 雲浩影, Gareth T, Gordon Flanders, and Moon Tang.

The vision for CantoPop Map is bigger still: to include classics alongside modern favorites, giving overseas Hong Kongers and Cantonese speakers everywhere a way to reconnect with the city’s streets, culture, and songs. Imagine planning a trip to Hong Kong and retracing the steps of your favorite artist, or rediscovering the songs of your youth through the places where they were filmed.
<p...Read More

His story reminds us that protecting Cantonese means protecting lives and communities.

When people ask me, “why save Cantonese?” they often mean to ask me directly, but don’t for fear of being seen as impolite, “why are you saving Cantonese?”. They expect answers about gongs and firecrackers from a Chinese New Year parade; they expect something mystical or even obsessive. I instead tell them that Cantonese is a matter of life and death.

In May 2021, 84-year-old Jean Chang Kan Fung passed away after California Highway Patrol officers dropped her off at the wrong location, miles from her home, because they did not speak Cantonese. Alan Wong, former City College of San Francisco Board President, recalls stepping in to interpret for a woman with a “big purple eye” at the hospital. It was a stroke of fate he was there, else she would have not received the necessary care, since nobody else there spoke Cantonese. When I tell people the importance of saving Cantonese, I tell them about the history of Chinese immigration to America and the communities today where Cantonese remains the language of day-to-day life; I tell them about turns of phrase like “it would have been better to birth a piece of char siu...Read More
