(3/8/21) SAPAAC Event: The Story of Cantonese at Stanford

· Stanford,Event,Campaign

Discussion Panel co-hosted with the Stanford Asian Pacific American Alumni Club (SAPAAC)

Team Cantonese joins forces with the Stanford Asian Pacific American Alumni Club (sapaac.org) to host a panel discussion about "The Story of Cantonese at Stanford." The ongoing campaign to "Save Cantonese" from devastating budget cuts reveals the language's uncertain future at our alma mater.

Instructor Dr. Sik Lee Dennig (PhD '92), Dr. Gina Tam (PhD '16) and Dr. Jamie Tam (BS '10) will first address the cultural and political history of Cantonese, tracing its roots from Guangdong and its diffusion through a global diaspora. They will describe the continuing significance of Cantonese, then share about its history at Stanford University (including student-led efforts to create the program in 1997) and the ongoing campaign to protect and maintain the language for future generations.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Jamie Tam (BS '10).
