Join the Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) on Friday, May 6th at 4pm for a lecture with historian Richard Cheu. On this date we will commemorate the 140th anniversary of the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Cheu will describe how the Chinese Exclusion laws impacted every aspect of life for 20th century Chinese Americans until the end of the Exclusion Era in 1968, even offering his own perspectives of how he encountered the lasting effects in his own life in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
A Q&A session and book signing session will follow the lecture. The lecture will highlight aspects of exclusion that are related to current and past CHSA exhibits including: Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion, Chinese in Richmond, Chinese American Health Legacy Series, and Toward Equality: California’s Chinese American Women. Richard Cheu is currently a Ph.D. student in World History, mainly focusing on Chinese American history, at St. John’s University in NYC.
